What Is The REAL ID?

Passed by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID ACT establishes minimum security standards for state-issued Driver’s Licences and Identification cards that can be used for official federal purposes. REAL ID compliant driver’s licenses or IDs are required to board domestic flights and enter federal buildings.

How To Get A REAL ID:

Visit a Louisiana Office of Motor vehicle (OMV) field office or a Public Tag agent.

Checklist of documents you’ll need: (must be original or certified copies – photocopies are not acceptable)

One Proof Of Birth:

  • Original birth certificate or certified copy of a birth certificate issued by a state of the United States.

OR

  • A valid, CURRENT United States passport or passport card.

OR

  • Certificate of Naturalization issued by the Department of Homeland Security, Form N-550 or N-570.

Two Proofs Of Address:

  • Utility bills (i.e., water, gas, electric, cable/satellite TV, internet, telephone/cell phone).

AND/OR

  • Financial statements (i.e., bank/credit union, investment, credit card, loan/credit financing account statements).

AND/OR

  • Homeowner’s insurance policy or premium bill.

AND/OR

  • School record or transcript, report card, or student loan application. AND/OR
  • Voter’s registration card, Valid Louisiana driver’s license, or Firearms license.

One Verification Of Social Security Number:

  • Original Social Security Card.

OR

  • W-2 Tax form with applicant’s name and full or partial Social Security Number. OR
  • A pay stub with applicant’s name and full or partial Social Security Number. OR
  • Social Security documentation with applicant’s name and full or partial Social Security Number.

*If you are self-employed and don’t have a W-2 or a 1099, then you can use a copy of your income tax return.

Proof Of Insurance:

Proof of insurance is required for any person(s) with a vehicle registered in his/her name.

What Does A REAL ID Look Like?

Louisiana’s REAL ID credential has a gold circle with a star cutout in the top right corner of your driver’s license or ID.

How Much Does It Cost?

A REAL ID driver’s license costs $32.25 or $18.75 for drivers 70 years old and older.

How Long Is It Good For?

A Louisiana REAL ID expires after six years.
